Continuing what is already a global run of direct and impactful climate actions, today over 3,000 European citizens are taking to Lusatia, Germany to shut down one of Europe’s largest open-pit lignite mines.
The mines have been at the centre of a controversial sale that would see its owner,
Sweden’s state-owned firm Vattenfall, incur up to €2.9 billion in losses. Campaigners are urging the Swedish government to block the sale, while the spotlight it also on Germany to ensure it sees through its pledge to put an end to coal. Today’s
action follows a similar protest in the UK, while
Polish citizens took their fight to the country’s biggest pension fund calling on it to stop using citizen’s retirement money to destroy the climate. As fossil fuels face a downward spiral, there has never been a better time to break free from dirty energy and these latest actions are represent the growing cry from global citizens demanding a 100 per cent renewable future.
