Electricity production from lignite power plants in Poland at its lowest since 1985

The coal’s contribution to Poland’s energy mix in 2019 reached the lowest level in recent history. Import of electricity from Sweden, Germany, Lithuania, Czechia and Ukraine as well as increased production of energy from natural gas and renewable sources filled the gap. The percentage of electricity derived from coal burning in Poland's is still one of the highest in the world.

Domestic electricity production declined by 4%, consumption by nearly 1% (169.4 TWh of electricity) compared to the record-breaking 2018. The most recent draft of the Polish Energy Policy until 2040 and Poland’s National Energy and Climate Plan for the years 2021-2030 assume an increase of electricity demand in their models. Lower demand, higher imports and growing use of other fuels were most strongly felt by coal-fired power plants - coal-fired supplied 5% less electricity and lignite-fired 15% less compared to 2018.

Poland's wholesale electricity market is one of the most expensive in Europe. Countries with a greater contribution of renewable sources and nuclear power plants are offering more favorable prices, so domestic producers are becoming less competitive.
